Turkey requires an annual cotton production of three million acres; however, current cultivation is limited to one million acres, necessitating significant imports to meet demand. In Batman, a notable development is underway, with cotton planted across ten thousand acres this year. Impressively, this region achieved the highest yield per acre in Turkey during the previous year, involving the participation of 165 dedicated farmers.
Mr. Kağba, a prominent voice in the region, emphasizes the strategic importance of cotton, not only for the textile sector but also for the food and cosmetics industries. He advocates for an expansion of cotton cultivation in Batman from the current ten thousand acres to a range of forty to fifty thousand acres. This increase would provide crucial support to the regional textile industry.
Drawing a comparison with corn cultivation, which occupies approximately seventy thousand acres in Batman, Mr. Kağba highlighted the environmental and health considerations. He noted that corn farming can lead to excessive irrigation and the intensive use of fertilizers and pesticides, potentially harming both the soil and human health. In contrast, cotton presents itself as a more profitable and environmentally sustainable agricultural product.
Mr. Şehabettin Işık, a local cotton producer, shared his positive experiences, stating that cotton cultivation over the past three to four years has proven to be more productive and rewarding compared to corn. He did, however, underscore the need for increased governmental support, particularly for seeds and irrigation, which he believes would further enhance production levels.

At the National Cotton Council Workshop in Izmir, the announcement of a cotton support of 1,098 Turkish Lira per decare was made. Mr. Kağba suggests that increasing this support on a tonnage basis would likely encourage more farmers to engage in cotton production. He also pointed out that some lands in Batman are already achieving yields of 650-700 kilograms per decare, indicating a significant potential for further development.
Looking to the future, Mr. Kağba envisions an increase in cotton production in Batman leading to the establishment of local yarn factories. He believes that cultivating fifty to sixty thousand acres of cotton would attract such manufacturing facilities to the region, generating substantial employment opportunities. Mr. Kağba views cotton as a key project for the future economic growth of both Batman and Turkey.
Batman's fertile lands offer a significant opportunity to reduce Turkey's reliance on cotton imports. The shift by farmers from corn to cotton appears to pave the way for an agricultural model that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible. Experts concur that, with increased governmental support, Batman has the potential to become a leading force in Turkey's cotton production.
